Slave (African woman)

Man telling the women what to do

Signing a declaration in support of non importation

Purpose of the image:

The image shows a group of women discussing and signing a declaration in support of nonimportation, declaring that they will not drink tea and buy any British products.

This image was painted to show British society current events and how people were reacting to nonimportation.

Argument:

This painting basically sums up how americans are patriotic, have freedom of speech, and idealistic ideas.

Some examples shown are of where this image shows how Americans share freedom of speech and ideas, if you look in the middle left of the image there is a small group of women discussing the declaration. But if you look directly in the middle you see a man whispering in a woman's ear who is signing the declaration, basically showing the stereotype how woman can’t think for themselves and need a man to tell them what to do. The document’s historical context influences the source image because at the time this boycott was a big deal and was a huge impact to the British society.

Message:

The image’s message has endured over time because, the event has changed what the society used to be. And because of this event it shows how our society can handle things and make an impactful change. The similarities to 21st century images basically show what a group of people can do to change something they don’t like, or a law they disagree with.
